Tyne and Wear Sportshall Athletic Finals 2020

Our Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics team represented South Tyneside in the Sportshall Athletic Finals this morning after winning the previous round in December. The children competed against some fantastic athletes and we were over the moon with the performance that they delivered, finishing in 6th place overall in the whole of Tyne and Wear! Fantastic!

During our end of Autumn Term Achievement Assembly, the following pupils were awarded the ‘Artists of the Term’. As you can see from the photographs, the pupils of St Matthew’s certainly display a creative flair to their learning. Well done to all!

Years 5 and 6 enjoyed a festive fun day out at the Life Centre in Newcastle. They experienced the planetarium, watched a Science show, explored the superb space exhibitions and spent time on the ice rink. It was fantastic!

This morning, our Y5 and 6 Sportshall Athletics Team took part in the South Tyneside Finals at Temple Park. After weeks of training in PE lessons, all of the children performed brilliantly and were crowned South Tyneside Champions! Well done Team Matthews!

St Matthew’s Girls Football Team have won the Northern Cross Cup after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out against St Albans, Newcastle. The girls travelled to St Stephen’s Longbenton to contest the semi-finals against St Mary’s, Sunderland and St Mary’s, Whickham. Hawkhirst 2019

Y5 have enjoyed a fantastic residential at Hawkhirst in Kielder. They took part in a range of activities including canoeing, jetty jumping, abseiling, climbing, zip wire, archery, orienteering and camp fire fun. They also visited the Bird of Prey Centre in Kielder. They were an absolute joy to take away. Well done Y5!

World Book Day

We had a great time celebrating World Book Day. Each class looked at a particular author and dressed up as a character from a particular book. We held a parade at the start of the day! The standard of the costumes was possibly the best standard we’ve ever had! Well done to all!

Success at the Swimming Gala

The Key Stage 2  swimming team had great success at the South of Tyne Swimming  Gala, where they finished 7th overall- out of 31 teams. A special mention for the boys, who won a silvers medal in the boys relay and to Joe who won the gold medal in his individual event. Well done!
